How to shrink PDF files and reduce file size

Depending on the content, PDF files require a few megabytes (MB) of storage space. This is no problem even on small hard disks and SSDs - because large multimedia-enriched documents are usually likely to occur in small numbers. When uploading to the Internet, the files are rather cumbersome: Many e-mail providers limit the maximum size for attachments. In cloud storage, overly complex PDFs could exhaust the free capacity - not alone, but together with other files. The removal of pages or a reduction in quality helps to prevent this.

The free PDF24 tool "Shrink PDF Files" compresses your PDF files so that they take up less storage space.

Simply drag and drop the PDF file you want to reduce into the PDF24 web app and once the compression process is complete, you can download your reduced PDF with one click.

If you prefer to compress your PDF files by installing a single program on your PC, you can download the PDF24 Creator.

Conclusion: With the simple web app "Shrink PDF Files" you can easily compress your PDFs online in your browser so that they take up less storage space.

Alternative: Compress PDF files locally on your PC with the PDF24 Creator

If you do not want to reduce the PDF size by deleting pages, you compress a file that is too large. PDF24 Creator has a matching tile: Select "Compress PDF files" in the tool interface. Then import a document by dragging it into the window or by clicking on the "Add file" icon. Without changing a setting, the program would save the file in a reduced size: Compare the values for "Size" and "New Size"!

You can improve your savings with changed parameters: Click in the DPI and image quality fields and enter smaller values - which reduces the image quality. Click on "Calculate size" to update the "New size" forecast. In the drop-down menu behind "Color model" you can remove the colors from PDF-embedded images: Switching to "GRAY" often opens up further savings potential. Other color models are RGB and CMYK. Note: A changed color model may increase the file size. The tool turns the expected megabyte size of the new file green when you save memory - red as space requirements increase compared to the source file. In the second case, you should undo the color model change made using the drop-down menu.

Finally, select "Save" in the upper right-hand corner. The folder search dialog appears, in which you specify a destination folder. Confirm with "OK". The new file has the name of the original file.
